MARCH 1997 FLOOD
The Huntington District experienced one of the highest Ohio
River floods in 33 years.
Several deaths were reported
throughout the three state area of Kentucky, Ohio and West
Virginia. Many communities that have floodwall protection
installed the flood gates when flooding became apparent.
The Storm
During the period of March 1-5, the Corps rain gages
recorded amounts of 6-8 inches. Most of this amount was recorded in the
twenty-four hour period of March 1-2.
Corps Reservoirs
The flood control reservoirs were utilized to store flood
waters. Five of the Huntington District's reservoirs recorded
record levels.
